Maldon High School made an impressive start to the 2008 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday. They scored a shock 2-1 win over two-time champions Herbert Morrison Comprehensive at Bogue, in Montego Bay.

Jermaine Jackson (penalty) and Obrian Robinson got the goals for the winners, while Herbert Morrison's lone goal came from Brishnell Dawkins.

Loren Sailsman, the coach of the Maldon team said he was pleased with his team's performance as "...starting the season with maximum three points must be a good result."

In another Zone A game in Montego Bay, newcomers Green Pond High held seasoned campaigners Irwin High to 0-0 draw at the Irwin High School ground.

After a lacklustre first half at Bogue, Maldon started the second looking a bit more resolute and they were rewarded in the 55th minute when Sheldon Jackson was fouled in the penalty area. Jackson made no mistake from the spot.

Herbert Morrison stepped up the tempo of their play and drew level with a quality strike in the 67th minute. On a smart dribble that started outside the penalty area, Dawkins waltzed between three defenders and fired out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

However, before the Herbert Morrison celebrations had died down, Maldon regained the lead in the 70th minute with a well-taken goal. Robinson pounced on a superb pass from Conrod Gordon and with the goalkeeper at his mercy, fired home the winner.

The competition will continue this afternoon.
