Suppose Bolt wasn't Bolt?

Jackass sey de worl' no level. Jackass sey im a watch de people dem whey a itch up roun' an itch up pan Usain Bolt an' know sey if Bolt a neva Bolt dem woulden even 'prrrrp' pan im.

Jackass knows that he is not the only one who has seen the remarkable type of people who have hitched on to the Bolt bandwagon. Not that the type of people - the brownings, the reddings and the prominent in the society - are remarkable types themselves. To Jackass a no nobody dem. But they are remarkable in that Jackass suspects that normally they would have nothing to do with somebody like Bol - if it wasn't Bolt, if you see what I mean.

Panic button

Hell, if they saw Bolt walking in their neighbourhood and he wasn't Bolt, chances are they would press their panic button.

Y'see. Bolt is no longer Bolt, if you see what jackass means. He is no longer a tall, young black man from country who did not go to a noted high school and enjoys the 'Gully Creeper'. He is the fastest man on the planet and multiple world record-holder, an athletic superstar who is very camera- friendly. And he is certainly a rich young man.

So he is now not only acceptable, but desirable to those who would have someone looking like Bolt in their presence only as a gardener, mechanic or thief.

Serious ting.

The world is not level at all, because there are no Bolts who are not Bolts (you know what I mean) who are discriminated against and shot by the police in very questionable circumstances on a regular basis, as that peculiar dancehall Chi Ching Ching fellow would say. They look like Bolt, they dance like Bolt, they have the same exuberant personality like Bolt - but they are not celebrated like Bolt.

Jamaican society

Plus, there are many outstanding young men performing in the dancehall who are as accomplished in their field as Bolt - and, chances are, have a career with much more longevity, as certainly age and maybe injury are sure to get Bolt in the next 10 years. But the reddings and the brownings and the woevers in the Jamaican society do not swarm them. Jackass believes that it is because their job is to talk and, in so doing, they represent the values and attitudes of the places they come from.

The good thing about Bolt, as far as the people who would dream of associating with someone like him are concerned, is that he does not need to speak to do his job, yet he still appeals to that critical mass of Jamaicans they need to mass market their products. Sure, he does interviews, but he talks about racing and training, not things happening on the 'ghets'.

So, Jackass wonders, how many youths who look like Bolt cannot get a job because of their appearance, who are instantly rejected because of their 'wrong address', whose parents put in futile complaints to the relevant authorities after their sons have been shot down in the streets and died after a police 'operation'?

Jackass sey de worl' no level. Jackass sey im love ow de people dem respek Bolt, but dem fe respek de yute dem whe look like Bolt but no really reach yet.
