Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) scored an extra-time 3-2 win over Scotiabank last Sunday to top the 2008 Western Sports Norman Goodison Inter Bank one-day five-a-side football rally. The rally took place at the National Water Commission (NWC) playfield in Mona.

Nine teams participated in this year's competition with first-time entrants Guardian Life entering two teams. The traditional dress parade was won by Scotiabank , with Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) second and RBTT placing third.

All participating teams collected two Puma match balls from the sponsors Western Sports. In the preliminary round, Scotiabank topped zone one with 10 points from four matches, with JNBS second on seven points.

defending champions

In zone two National Commercial Bank (NCB) came out on top with nine points with defending champions BoJ, second on four points.

JNBS defeated NCB 2-0 in one semi-final, while Scotiabank beat BoJ 2-1 in the other semi-final.

Scotiabank who had defeated JNBS 2-1 earlier in the day, fell behind in the final. Kimani Yong gave JNBS the lead in the fifth minute when he beat goalkeeper Wayne Shaw from close range. Scotiabank got numerous chances to equalise but poor shooting from Nicholas McCreath, Donovan Hibbert and Elgin Mitchell, plus excellent goalkeeping from Marlon Smith prevented them from scoring before half-time.

level terms

On the resumption, JNBS went 2-0 up when an error by goalkeeper Wayne Shaw allowed a shot from Rohan Rainford to beat him at his near post. This goal seemed to wake up Scotiabank players as within five minutes they were back on level terms. Richard West received a defence-splitting pass from Nicholas McCreath and he shot past Marlon Smith in goal to make it 2-1. A minute later McCreath beat defenders Lauren Riley and Gregory Buchanan and easily shot past Smith to make it 2-2.

Disaster then struck for Scotiabank in the 20th minute. A reckless tackle from Stephan Bartley on Gregory Buchanan resulted in the former being shown a red card by referee Keeble Williams. The game ended 2-2 at full time. JNBS got the winning goal in the third minute of extra time when Lauren Riley picked up a loose ball and shot past Shaw in goal.

The league will kick off tomorrow with three matches. At the NWC playfield Guardian Life will play JNBS at 2 p.m. and at 4 p.m. defending champions NCB tackle BoJ. At the Old Men's Hockey Field, Mona, Scotiabank play RBTT at 3 p.m.
