While some Jamaicans lost their homes and belongings in Tropical Storm Gustav, Barrington Gordon, lost something much more valuable - his brother.
His grief is compounded by the fact that the body of his brother Desmond, who is believed to have been swept from his house by the raging Hope River, is yet to be found. Desmond's girlfriend, Anna 'Beauty' Campbell, was also swept away. Her body was found Friday.
Desmond, 50, who lived in Penfield, Gordon Town, St. Andrew, was reportedly at home with his girlfriend when the board structure they shared, was forced off the hill by tumbling debris sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Planned meetingBarrington said he had been planning to meet with him last week, but just did not get around to doing so. Now he no longer has the opportunity. He revealed he attempted to call his brother shortly before the tragedy. He said, "Thursday night, mi send him a please call me and about five minutes after mi phone ring. It was him girlfriend dat call and she said he was sleeping. As I was about to ask her another question, mi jus hear 'bup' and di phone cut off."
Gordon is convinced that his brother is dead. He said, "Di house was on a hill. It look like when di water and debris come dung now, im jus fly out and go straight into di river. I just assume that he is dead but di ting is jus to find him."
Barrington said the news of his brother's disappearance was thrust upon him by a resident, who was merely sharing the story with him, not knowing that he was the brother of the deceased. He said, "Somebody see mi an a tell mi dat di girl wash whe an call di girl name and den she tell mi seh 'har man wash whe too'. An I seh is mi brother dat. Di way how mi hear is like mi head open up same time."
Identifying brotherMost of their relatives are overseas, so it will be Gordon's job to identify his older brother, if and when his body is found. He said, "We have a good relationship. All mi head a hurt mi. I don't know if I can take it. I am the only one that can identify him."
Gordon has made several checks with the Madden's Funeral Home and the Papine police, but neither had any information that could help him. "They said they don't get any calls about any bodies. I jus getting pure hearsay story."
Though he has already accepted that his brother is gone, he is deeply in need of closure - something he says he will not get until his brother's body is found.
