The Caribbean media partners for the Reebok Grand Prix, at which Jamaican sprint marvel Usain Bolt first broke the 100 metres world record in May, have joined in the outpouring of congratulations for the triple Olympic champion.
Jamaica-born Louis Grant, vice president of the New York-based Irie Jam Radio, yesterday said Bolt had done his country proud by winning the 100 metres Olympic gold medal in a world record 9.69 seconds, noting it had been "a proud moment for all Jamaicans in the Diaspora".
"On behalf of Reebok, the entire management and staff of Irie Jam Radio and Irie Jamboree, I am pleased to extend congratulations to the new Olympic and world record 100 metres champion, Usain Bolt, to coach Glen Mills and the entire team for their incredible performance, culminating in Bolt's decisive victory in Beijing, over a field of the world's fastest men," Grant said in a statement.
Grant also congratulated Trinidadian Richard Thompson for placing second in the Olympic 100 metres.
"Kudos to Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago for a most inspiring second-place finish to take home the silver medal," he said.
"Independence Day celebrations in T&T later this month should prove equally inspiring."
Bolt captured three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, in three world record performances.
Grant said this year's Irie Jamboree festival, one of the largest reggae festivals in North America, would be dedicated to all Caribbean athletes, who participated in the Olympics.
He said that the VIP tent would be named the "Usain 'Lightning' Bolt VIP Tent" to honour Bolt's historic world record run in New York.
Among the top acts slated to perform at Irie Jamboree 2k8, on Labour Day, on August 31, are Yellowman, Beenieman, Coco Tea, Sizzla, and Elephant Man.
