Fireman receives suspended sentence

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Spanish Town

A 32-year-old fireman attached to the Franklyn Town Fire Station was given a one-year suspended sentence for assault when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He is Nehemiah Shaw of a Kingston address. The Crown led evidence that Shaw was a member of dancehall artiste Mavado's entourage on June 14 this year which followed the entertainer to the Caymanas Park for a performance.

It was said that while they was leaving the facility, an argument developed between a member of the entourage and another person at the park.

Cop assaulted

Knives were drawn and policemen tried to quell the fight, during which Jason McKoy, a district constable at the St Catherine South Division, was assaulted by Shaw. With the assistance of other police personnel, Shaw was arrested and charged with assault, resisting arrest, among other charges.

He did plead not guilty when the case came up in late June, and it was set for trial where he was convicted.
