Still basking in the success of Jamaica's athletes at the Beijing Olympics, Prime Minister Bruce Golding yesterday announced that the Government planned to roll out a series of initiatives aimed at further strengthening sports in the country.

Among these initiatives was a plan by Government to establish a centre of international sporting excellence to focus on new and upcoming talents in all areas of sports.

Speaking at a meeting with the Olympic Homecoming planning committee at Jamaica House, Golding said support to sporting organisations such as the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association, the Jamaica Olympics Association and the Institute of Sports would be strengthened to enable them to upgrade and improve their services.

He said while the committee was busy putting together the plans for the celebrations of the Olympic team's accomplishments as well as the rewards for them and their coaches, a look was being taken at long-term development plans and benefits.

These should include the provision of health insurance, the creation of a medical centre to address medical needs, financial advice and management of finances, especially for those athletes whose financial status had now changed based on their achievements at the Olympic Games.

The meeting also proposed the establishment of a special bank account through which organisations and individuals could make their contribution to the development of some of the programmes being proposed.

There will also be the reintroduction of a well-rounded physical education programme in schools starting at the primary level. This will be done in consultation with the Ministry of Education.

Jamaica shone at the recently concluded 29th Olympiad, picking up 11 medals, including six gold.
