Mother, daughter fined in assault case

A mother and daughter were reprimanded before being slapped with a combined fine of $25,000 in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The mother and daughter appeared in court to answer charges of malicious destruction of property and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court was told that the child and the complainant were involved in a fight on Balcombe Drive in Kingston that left the complainant sustaining many injuries.

Subsequently, the fight became more intense when the girl's mother joined the action and eventually gave the complainant a fine beating. The matter was reported to the police and both mother and daughter were arrested.

When Resident Magistrate Glen Brown spoke on the matter, he said he was ashamed of the mother's behaviour. He asked, "Which one of you lead the other astray? You should be setting example for your daughter and your daughter went to a name-brand school, it just shows that name-brand school don't make you good."

The mother replied by saying the matter was blown out of proportion.
