Bolt will get own dance - 'Gully Creepa' creator to make 'moves' for Usain

Krista Henry and Dwayne McLeod, Staff Reporters

Dancer Ice, the creator of the popular 'Gully Creepa' dance, says he plans to create a dance called 'Usain Bolt'. - Nathaniel Stew

Usain Bolt seems an unlikely purveyor of dancehall culture abroad. After all, his moves on the track have little to do with those created in the ghetto by men and women whose talents lie, not in speed, but in rhythm and grace.

But Bolt has done for local dances, what artistes such as Elephant Man and Voicemail, despite their immense popularity, have not. He has brought worldwide attention to the locally created moves.

Bolt will have a special reward for doing so from renowned dancer Ice, the creator of the immensely popular 'Gully Creepa'.

Ice, sees Bolt's performance off field as a step in the right direction for Jamaican dance and plans to reward him with a dance to call his own.

"Mi have a dance weh mi ago call di 'Usain Bolt', a one a di maddest ting...Weh dem ago do when Mr. Bolt a do it side a mi?," Ice said.

"A di dance name Gully Net mi ago change and call Usian Bolt eno. It look like di creepa a way but it have a likkle more fancy neatness to it. Yu bend down an yu hand dem a move like di creepa, yu shoulder dem a rotate, foot dem a move like di creepa wid yu leg dem a move same speed. Mi drop in all a likkle neck movement inna it to," Ice said as he gave a brief description of his new dance called the 'Usain Bolt'.

Record breaking run

Ice's dance, 'Gully Creepa', for which Elephant Man record ed a song of the same name, was so popular that some thought Bolt's performance at the end of his 100 metre record breaking run was of the Gully Creepa, and not the Nuh Linga.

The 100 metre juggernaut performed dancer Overmars' Nuh Linga at the end of his 100 metre race.

Since then, the dancer, who forms part of the Ding Dong-led Ravers Clavers group has received much attention from the press. He is happy for the celebrity that Bolt has brought him.

"It's like somebody out there is doing my ting (dance)... di fastest man in di world is doing my dance. It's so great mi caan forget that moment," Overmars said.

Adding, "I think di dance buss again. Like I was in di streets last night and when Fire Links a go play di song dem intro it by talking bout Bolt."

Bolt continued dancing yesterday morning, with head phones in place, as he warmed up for the heats of the 200 metre race - this time doing the Gully Creepa.

Persons have been talking non-stop about Bolt's moves off the track, with some foreigners not knowing quite what to think of his antics.

However, for most Jamaicans, it was a humorous and proud moment that showed the range of Jamaican culture and talent.

Ice never actually saw Bolt 'creeping' but he heard about it afterwards from the number of calls he received. "A gully creepa a di biggest ting, people nuh sweep a farin, a vacuum dem vacuum... yuh nuh see Ice gone gold to... mi love goes out to Mr Bolt, di man a creep pon live TV," Ice said.
