Two policemen watch as firemen and other personnel remove a Toyota 4Runner from the Sandy Gully, St Andrew, yesterday. The SUV was washed away by heavy flood waters. - Norman Grindley

The body of a woman was retrieved from a motor vehicle in Sandy Gully yesterday morning.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, is believed to be in her 20s and is five feet, three inches tall. She was wearing a grey blouse and pink tights.

The police believe the woman was a passenger in the car, which is thought to have been driven by a male, who fled the scene. It is believed that they were attempting to cross the flooded gully when the vehicle got out of control.

Residents reported seeing the vehicle in the gully from about 6 a.m.

The van, a blue Toyota 4Runner sports utility vehicle, bearing the licence plate 0194 EV, was found near Perkins Boulevard.
