Francis - File
BEIJING, China:
Asafa Powell, one of the overwhelming favourites for the 100m title this weekend, worked out under the watchful eyes of his coach Stephen Francis 'officially' yesterday, this after the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) returned the coach's accreditation.
Both have a history of disagreements and only recently, Francis accused the JAAA of 'wanting his athletes to fail", one the body strongly denied.
Francis, who is personal coach for one-fifth of Jamaica's track & field athletes in Beijing, refused to accept his accreditation from Jamaica's Ambassador to China, Wayne McCook.
The ambassador, it is reported used his diplomatic status to get into the airport to deliver the accreditation to Francis, as the coach would not have been allowed into China without the official Games identification (which also serves as a visa
for Olympic purposes), or a
China visa.
However, he later returned the accreditation to the JAAA, which had attained it on his behalf.
According to a source, Francis sent an athlete to retrieve the accreditation, but the person was told to ask the coach to get it
himself.
Yesterday, chef de mission of Jamaica's delegation at
the Games, Don Anderson, confirmed that Francis now has his accreditation again.
