Spanish Town
The father of a seven-year-old girl who appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court charged with child abuse arising out of the constant physical abuse of a child, was remanded while the stepmother is being sought by the police.
Investigating officer, Kemesha Smith, of the Spanish Town Police Station outlined that between September last year and July 18, the seven-year-old ran away from home on at least seven occasions. The step-mother would normally report her missing.
Unstable nature
The officer revealed further that the child would seek the intervention of her biological mother who does not seem able to help due to the unstable nature of her occupation. On the last occasion however, Smith said that the child, after being reported missing, returned home and was taken to the police station where the police observed marks of violence all over her body. The Centre For the Investigation of Sexual Offence and Child Abuse commenced a probe which led to the arrest of the man.
When the case was called up for mention Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Greene expressed grave concern over the incident and told the officer to do further investigations with a view to charging the mother with aiding and abetting child abuse.
The case will again be mentioned on September 2.
