Marcus Garvey's great grandson arrested

A man said to be National Hero, Marcus Garvey's great grandson, was brought before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court for carnal abuse.

Devon Garvey, 18 years old, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Allegations are that on May 31, Garvey and the 12-year-old complainant were returning home from church, when she was taken to his home in St. Andrew where she was sexually assaulted.

The matter was reported to the police and he was later arrested and charged. Christopher Townsend, who represents Garvey denied the allegations when the matter was mentioned on Wednesday.

A preliminary enquiry was set for September 28 and the accused, was granted $80,000 bail with surety.
