RDX's 'booming' and Mavado's 'special treat' definitely brought more life to the already wonderful Grand Gala at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

The event, which has been absent from the Independence Day celebration for years, was well appreciated as more than 30,000 people packed the stadium to witness the superb affair. Scores of ticketless persons also forced their way into the venue to get a taste of the proceedings.

Unity

This grand display of unity was seen when RDX performed Boom and immediately most of the crowd started jumping and shouting to show their agreement with the dancehall duo.

When the duo perfromed Everybody Dance the crowd responded with hands in the air as they danced 'To The World'. RDX was also in the company of several dancers, including Bermuda Kid, who did dance moves like 'New York', 'Delly Scatter', 'Powercut' and ''90s Rock'.

RDX was preceded by Mavado, who at the mere mention of his name had the crowd in frenzy. He sang So Special while noting that he was proud of Jamaica and its independence. For Overcome and On The Rock, he simply held the microphone as the crowd sang the words for him.

Da'Ville received a lukewarm reception but the screams were high for Rising Stars Noddy Virtue and Jodi-Ann Pantry who gave a passionate and dramatic rendition of Bed Of Roses.

Blazing D'Angel

Kimiela Issacs, top female Jamaica Cultural Development Commission performer, had a lovely voice. Gyptian performed a couple songs then made a swift exit. D'Angel 'blazed' but got a small boo, then proved that she was 'stronger' as the crowd warmed up to her.

Freddie McGregor was decent but the younger audience members were unfamiliar with his songs. Etana sang alongside dancers for Roots, Wrong Address and IAm Not Afraid, while QQ made the crowd dip and wine for Stookie and Rum Ram.

Bryon Lee and the Dragonnaires also gave a lively set with songs like What A Bam Bam, Tiny Winey and Carolina. There were also performances from costumed groups like 'Ancestral Passion', 'Independence Symphony', 'Songs of Freedom', 'Make A Joyful Noise', 'Coronation Market', 'Olympic Dream' and 'Passa Passa'.

As the end neared, girls danced on the field to Johnny P's Bike Back, the lights were turned off and bikers entered with dancers on their bikes. They circled the cycling velodrome creating a wonderful scene of lights and noise; causing a large uproar from the audience.

As the dancing continued, beautiful and frightening fireworks created the perfect backdrop for the venue, while Roy Rayon sang his winning festival song Rise and Shine to end.
