FIX-IT: Family prays for a gully wall

section of this wall by the side of this gully in Vineyard Town, which was broken away by heavy flood waters in 2005, has again caused serious flooding. - Norman Grindley

AS PART of our mission to be the People Paper, THE WEEKEND STAR has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter, Carolyn Johnson, along with photographer Norman Grindley, will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed. We will then have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.

Last week, we went to Vineyard Town, where Lydgia Davis and her family have been living at the mercy of a gully since 2005. During the heavy rains in that year, the wall that had separated her yard from the gully was washed away. All that remains is a large hole through which water and debris flow into her yard, threatening to wash her out.

Contacted NWA

Having heard about and seen her plight, the WEEKEND STAR contacted the National Works Agency (NWA) to get a response.

"It is something we are aware of. We have been approached by the Member of Parliament for the area, Mrs Maxine Henry-Wilson, she is actually aware of it too," Stephen Shaw, communications and customer service manager of the NWA, said. "Through the constituency development fund she wants to carry out some work."

He further explained that the MP has received assistance from the NWA, which has carried out site visits and is in the process of constructing an estimate. "As soon as we finish the estimate, we will know where we are in terms of the MP's contribution and make up the shortfall," Shaw said. He anticipates, however, that the repair will be costly.

Until then, we pray with Ms Davis and her family that this will be a quiet hurricane season.
