Drama fills result show

Tension brewed to a sweltering point last Friday at the first live result show for the Digicel Rising Stars 2008 competition.

Three contestants, Patrice, Tru Essence and Nigel, were left and only one could advance to the final five from the collection of nine acts.

Earlier R3, Lashana, Secret Melodies and K'Alee were all given their pass, thanks to the voting public. However, Orale and Rondel were given marching orders.

Now it was the trio facing the 'gun'. The public, who had voted during the week, had already decided their fate, but host Yendi Phillipps was making them sweat. They were visibly restless as anxiety strained their nerves. The suspense also spread to the audience, creating a hush that further taunted the contestants and made the moment even tenser.

Nervousness

A commercial break was taken before the final announcement, and this unnerved the three contestants even more. Patrice was not able to hide her nervousness like the others, she rocked from side to side, rubbed her palms vigorously and occasionally stared blankly at the ground.

It was no surprise that Patrice wept openly when it was announced that she failed to make the final cut. Even the judges were shocked and Nadine made it clear that Jamaica had got it wrong.

"No no, no. Two of the most talented singers did not make it to the top 10. I expected Patrice to be in the top 10, Jamaica definitely got it wrong," a surprised Nadine argued.

Similar sentiments rang from stand-in judge, Cherine Anderson.

"I reviewed the tapes several times and was of the opinion that Patrice was one of the best singers in the competition. I thought she should have made it through - Jamaica got it wrong," she said.

Anthony Miller was indifferent. It was as if it did not matter to him whether Jamaica got it right or wrong. It was as if the talent he was scouting for was not present at the result show. However, he seemed somewhat pleased that Secret Melodies made it through, but was quick to advice them that they needed a lot of work.

Speaking with THE STAR after finding out that she was not going to progress any further in the competition, Patrice had this to say.

"I will enter the competition again. It was a great experience, so I will give it another shot. Right now, I just graduated from the Garmex HEART Academy and am looking to further my education," she said.

THE STAR: Will you continue to watch the remainder of the competition?

PATRICE: I will continue to watch because my best friend is in it still and I will continue to support her.

The final five to make up the top 10 will be known after the live results show this Friday. They performed yesterday in the Knutsford Court Hotel Auditorium and are awaiting your vote to see whether they will go through or be eliminated.
