'Ver' hunting big 100 metres victory

by Raymond Graham, Freelance Writer

Veronica Campbell-Brown - file

Following today's men's 100 metres clash which features Jamaica's Asafa Powell the women will take the spotlight tomorrow in the short sprint at the two-day Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace.

The clash between Powell and American Tyson Gay should have been the highlight of today's action but Gay has been forced out of the meet as he is recovering from a hamstring injury.

Veronica Campbell-Brown, the Olympic 200 metres champion, has been in immaculate form since failing to make the top three in the 100m at the National Championships. Tomorrow she will get a chance to make up for that disappointment when she comes face to face with her conquerors.

The event is loaded with the best in the world. The top four Americans - Muna Lee, Torri Edwards, Lauryn Williams and Marshevet Hooker - will face Campbell. Jamaica's top three, national champion Kerron Stewart, Shelly-Ann Frazer and Sherone Simpson will also compete.

Exciting battle

An exciting battle is also expected in the women's 400 metres hurdles tomorrow as Jamaica's Melaine Walker who has been having a fantastic season will face another tough test. She will face world leader Lashinda Demus of the United States who will not be in Beijing along with Poland Anna Jesien who was third at last year's World Championships in Osaka. Jamaican Shevon Stoddart will also be in this event.

After a disappointing run in Sweden where she finished at the back of the field, national champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton will be hoping to get back on track in the women's 100 metre hurdles. She will come up against world leader Lolo Jones of the United States and Australia's Sally McLellan who both defeated her in mid week.

Another Jamaican competing at the meet will be Beijing-bound Markino Buckley. Buckley who finished third at the Jamaican Championships in the men's 400 metres hurdles will face top-ranked American Kerron Clement.
