Yesterday a team of 38 young Jamaican athletes returned to the island after retaining the trophy in the 12th Biennial (CUT0 Track and Field Championships. Having won it in 2004 and 2006, this is the third consecutive time that Jamaica have won the event, hosted by CUT.
The event this year, held at Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, ended late on Friday and on its conclusion the majority of the individual trophies were won by Jamaicans. Jamaica had the champion male athlete in the Under-9, Under-11 and Under-15 sections as well as the female champion in the Under-9 and Under-11 sections.
Representatives from 10 Caribbean countries took part in the two- day track meet, including: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Trinidad and Tobago.
Member countries of the CUT take turns in hosting the championships and there have been a number of budding athletes who have taken part in the past. Such athletes include Obadele Thompson of Barbados, Darrel Brown and Marc Burns of Trinidad and Tobago and Theon O'Connor and Petra Fanty of Jamaica.
