Teacher's bail extended in student assault case

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Spanish Town

A teacher who is accused of organising the beatings of four male students after accusing them of taking a cellphone, had his bail extended on assault charges and will reappear in the St Catherine Resident Magistrate's Court on September 30.

The teacher appeared in court yesterday, where a new mention date was set as his attorney Earl Hamilton was not present.

The four teenagers, who all appeared before RM. Lorna Errar told the court that they have graduated from the institution and are now awaiting CXC results.

The teacher's appearance arose from an incident in March when the police had to rescue the four boys from the Dela Vega City Community Centre, where they were found kneeling, while allegedly being beaten by several men.

The accused teacher, the police claim, was present, and after investigations he was charged with several counts of assault and wounding. He has maintained his innocence throughout his court appearances.
