Bulls hit perfect 10

Port Royal Bulls marched past the JDF 64-57 in the KFC-sponsored National Basketball League (NBL) at the National Stadium courts yesterday, bringing their overall record for the season to a perfect 10 wins in as many starts, the best record in the league.

They are now one win better than defending champions Urban Knights, who play Portmore Flames on Thursday. The Bulls and Knights will face off the following day at the Stadium courts as the first round draws to a close.

Four Bulls players, Kenardo Wright (13), Leighton Meeks (12), Paul Brown (11) and captain Dovian Wade (11) claimed double figures in yesterday's encounter. The JDF, which dropped to 4-6, were led by Raymond Francis, who had a game high 22 points while Dermaine Foster added 15.

The coach of Port Royal Bulls Oniel Williams claimed that his team was just having some fun on the court and that is what allowed the JDF to stay in the game, but believed his players eventually stepped up their game to ensure that they remained undefeated.

"We were always confident of victory because we defeated JDF in Division One, and we knew we could beat them again. We just steped up in the fourth quarter and the game was ours," Williams told Star Sports.

The game was neither pretty nor easy for the Bulls. They played casually for the first three quarters and trailed 35-41 going into the fourth. However, the Bulls scored 29 points to the JDF's 16 points in the final quarter, feeding off a 15-0 run to start that stanza, which basically put the game behind reach of the soldiers.

"We had our chance to win the game, but we started taking bad shots, and they scored off our misses and came back in the game," said JDF coach Jonah Atkinson.

"We played good defence but we missed a lot of lay-ups especially in the fourth quarter and that cost us the game," he added.
