THE EDITOR, Sir:
I have said it already and I will say it again: "Half of a loaf is better than no bread." And there are many people who make do with little or nothing. God knows how they are coping on meagre salaries. They can hardly cope with the rising cost of living. They have difficulty paying their bills. They are just barely
surviving.
Griping
On the other hand, the gripers are always complaining. The more they get is the more they want. They just seem to be wanting more and more. And the little that the poor man has, it seems like some of them want to take it away. According to the rising inflation, the minimum wage should be at least $4,500-$5,000. An increase of $500, making it $3,700, is still too small. Think about those who have to pay their bills, find their lunch money and bus fare out of this 'chicken feed'.
Bonus
I hope if these minimum-wage earners are working Saturdays and Sundays, they are given something special. And if they ask their employers for an increase, they will not grimace or turn a deaf ear.
I think the Government should categorise these employers. For example, the owners or managers of all the business places that are in full swing and making a lot of profit should give their employees more than the minimum wage - say at least $5,000. I think many of them can afford to give this amount.
Moreover, the employers whose businesses are not as strong, in terms of finance, should pay their workers the fixed rate.
Singularly speaking, if you have a good helper, treat him/her right. Don't be too exact with a faithful worker. Be honest with a hard worker. Remember: "Do unto others as you would have them do to you."
I am, etc.,
