FITZNAHUM Williams' ALSAFRA is again being doubted ahead of tomorrow's Jamaica St Leger, even though she's on the verge of sweeping the Triple Crown series following her convincing Jamaica Derby victory last month.
The filly, who was thought not good enough to beat the colt ROYAL IMAGE in the Derby but humbled her rival with two furlongs to run, has her detractors jumping out of their skins after she lost an exercise workout to Richie Todd's WHEEL N DEAL.
Todd's WHEEL N DEAL won the seven-furlong spin in 1:28.3 last Saturday, beating ALSAFRA, who clocked 1:29.3.
Word has it that the clockers could not believe their eyes when WHEEL N DEAL pulled away from ALSAFRA and stayed on to win the workout.
WHEEL N DEAL's stocks has now soared and Todd's runner, who was quietly whispered to win the Derby but decked Dane Nelson at the five-furlong pole, is now being touted as a contender, in addition to ROYAL IMAGE, who started favourite in the Derby.
However, Williams, an experienced horseman, who presented ALSAFRA in unbeatable condition for her last three races, has seemingly got to know his filly inside-out and has obviously tempered her preparations for the St Leger.
Biggest three-year-old
Williams has not asked her to rip at exercise as he did for the Derby and seems to be playing possum, having realised his filly is the biggest three-year-old in training, giving the opposition a sense of false hope.
In addition, a match race at exercise cannot be used to write off a classic horse, who a month ago, beat the best three-year-olds in the land rather easily.
What Williams has ensured is that she is not under-trained and her doubters could very well be in for the shock of their lives as she could very well be in charge from as early as the half-mile.
Listening to Brain Harding after the Derby, he literally said he enjoyed an armchair ride, pointing out that he wondered why ROYAL IMAGE had not quickened when he tested him at the three-pole.
ALSAFRA's doubters need to also note that when she kicked off the turn, she immediately put a length and a half on ROYAL IMAGE, not only leaving the colt for dead but claiming the rail, well clear, which he held entering the straight.
As far as WHEEL N DEAL is concerned, it will be interesting to see a horse, who has never won in excess of five and a half furlongs, beat the best three-year-olds at 10 furlongs.
ROYAL IMAGE, going two furlongs shorter and working as sweet as ever, has nothing to complain about.
He has his best chance to beat the filly but her Derby performance suggests she is too classy for him and should go on to become only the third filly to win a local Triple Crown series.
Pick-9 players will be out in force tomorrow, hunting bankers and outsiders for a shot at the $23.3-million carryover.
RIGGS VICTORY is a banker in what appears to be a tough race, the 1100-metre 10th event for $180,000 claimers.
Despite the presence of the tough MOST WANTED, RIGGS VICTORY has worked too good to be beaten on a $180,000 tag.
He ran evenly for sixth, running wide at the quarter bend, behind KEELER on Saturday after posting two sweet seven-furlong workouts at the backend of last month.
