The open drain full of water on Barry street in Kingston. - norman grindley
AS PART of our mission to be the People Paper, THE WEEKEND STAR has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter, Carolyn Johnson, along with photographer Norman Grindley, will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed. We will then have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.
'Pool' in the sidewalk
There remains a 'pool' in the sidewalk at the corner of Barry and King streets, downtown Kingston, as what seems to be a broken pipe has filled a large drain with water. The vendors who sell near the 'pool' told THE WEEKEND STAR last week that many persons have fallen in the drain, which has been open and filled with water for about a year.
This week we spoke with a store manager of Khemlani Mart, as the drain sits to the corner of their King Street outlet. He says the drain has been open for more than a year and the store has written to the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation, which said the matter was for the National Water Commission (NWC). He said the head office then sent a letter to the NWC. "They told me they would send someone to look at it," the upset store manager said. "We got something to cover it. They took it out. One time I fell down in that hole."
When the WEEKEND STAR called the NWC, Marescaux Road office, our report was taken by a gentleman from the Control Centre, who told us they would look at the drain.
Hmmm, we wonder how long it will take them from Marescaux Road to King Street, another year...?
