West Indies captain Chris Gayle wants the domestic season to be extended and run concurrently with the international home series.
Gayle made the observation on Thursday against the background that uncapped pair of Shawn Findlay and Nikita Miller having been drafted into the West Indies squad without the benefit of recent serious competitive cricket.
"It is a very good point. I think it has affected us. Guys finish their club cricket a bit early and you still have Test cricket going on," Gayle told reporters.
"It is something we need to take into consideration, make the first-class season a bit longer, so guys can come in and play good competitive cricket."
The 2008 Carib Beer Series finished on April 28, but Findlay, a left-hand batsman, and Miller, a left-arm spinner, would have still had the benefit of playing in Jamaica's domestic competitions.
In the past, several other players would have been picked in the middle of the international season when they were inactive at first-class level.
"It is always going to be difficult sitting at home and come into international cricket and expect to perform," Gayle said.
"We need to set some better programmes. We have the facilities here. We have to utilise them as much as possible."
If the Carib Beer Series was on at the same time as the international season, it could also help discarded West Indies players, Gayle added.
"If someone gets dropped, they can go back into first-class cricket. It is something we need to look at," he said.
