Ammo carrier gets suspended sentence

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Spanish Town

Dwayne Smith of Tawes Pen, St Catherine, walked from the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court with a bright smile on Tuesday, after he was given a suspended sentence for illegal possession of ammunition.

The court learnt that on June 23, Smith was a passenger on a bus, which was stopped along Old Harbour Road by police personnel. He was searched and six 9mm cartridges found in his pocket. He was charged by the police.

When he appeared before RM Lorna Errar, he pleaded guilty. His lawyer, Earle Hamilton, successfully argued for a non-custodial sentence, and he was sentenced to six months hard labour, suspended for two years.

This means that if Smith is found guilty of any offence within the next two years, he will serve the six months.
