Is it worth having more than one console?

When you buy FIFA 08 on the Xbox360, it is definitely not the same game on the NintendoWii. When you buy Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon on the Xbox, it is not the same game on the Sony PlayStation 2.

Microsoft entered the gaming industry with a vengeance. They not only added a console, but requested added features to equally distributed games. These additions gave them the edge on graphics, maps, game play and even cheat codes. The first time it became more prominent than ever was with the launch of Soulcalibur II.

This game was exclusive to Dreamcast. But after the fall of Sega, the game developers, Namco, went rogue and tried to capitalise on a great fighting game. Nintendo's Gamecube had Link, Microsoft's Xbox had Spawn and Sony's Playstation 2 offered Heihachi Mishima.

The inclusion of Link in the Gamecube version is believed to be a major factor why this version had superior sales worldwide for Soulcalibur II. It sold over 800,000 copies in the first month.

The loyalty factor

Last week we mentioned one key reason to buy a console which would be for exclusive games. With so many games being made today for "The Next Gen" consoles, it is hard for a true gamer to turn his back on games because of loyalty. If you love to play fighting games, you are going to want a PS3. It would be crazy not to get one. But if you are first person shooter fan, Xbox360 is going to be your choice of weaponry. And if you love Mario, you are not going to give him up for the world.

The point is, it is not about preference anymore, it is about the experience. Technology is moving and you do not want to be left behind. Go next door, test the other console out you might just be surprised.

Did you know?

1. Fifty per cent of all gamers own more than one console.

2. In Jamaica 50 per cent use their console to watch movies.

3. Ninety per cent of those who own an Xbox360 uses Xbox Live.
