Cornerstone

Jason Mighty - contributed

Cornerstone

Artiste: Jason Mighty

Genre: Gospel

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Jason Mighty manages to keep his topics current while bridging the gap between traditional and reggae gospel as he incorporates different genres on his Cornerstone album.

He starts his album with the National Anthem, which is a prayer showing that he is hoping for improvements in the country. With a start such as this he appeals to Christians and non-Christians.

In Da Vinci Code Mighty defends his beliefs as he dismisses the ideas presented in the Da Vinci Code novel and movie. He voices his disapproval of people supporting the novel and movie saying, "Fire Pon Da Vinci Code/ What a lie, what a lie/ Mi sorry fi the Christians who a promote it/ unnu judgement ago worse than who wrote/ Unnu spen' unnu money and promote it/ Remember everything the Father a note it".

Uptempo

Hallelujah is a uptempo song to which people can dance while they give praises as it has a disco beat. God Alone has a hip-hop beat but he is audible and rides the rhythm comfortably. Mighty uses both dialect and standard English, showing that he is comfortable with both.

In Angels he says, "I'll praise you in my sorrows, praise in my shame, I'll praise in the darkness, praise you always." He sounds relaxed when singing the song and he has a smooth rhythm to complement the lyrics.

One Soul with Mighty and DJ Nicholas is the perfect praise and worship song, which is a decent combination of deejaying and singing. The chanting in the song forces the listener to jump for joy.

In Wanna Know Jason Mighty is flat in sections but the backup singers complement his voice. His passion is felt as he repeats 'I wanna know why you love me so'.

Fill This Place and Be Magnified are both soft prayers through which the singer seems to be reflecting on his life and the ways in which the Lord has manifested Himself. His clarity is on point in these pieces.

In Ready Jason Mighty collaborates with his brother Prodigal Son. The song has high energy and encourages dancing, but in sections Mighty sounds nasalised while Prodigal is inaudible. They encourage the listener to 'jump up', 'turn yuh roll', and 'make a dip'.

Vocal ability

Mighty shows off his vocal ability in Can't Walk Alone which has an R&B sound, but the strong drumming and bass guitar gives the song a reggae element.

Senorita is also a calm song with gospel artiste Promise adding his rap flavour. Mighty comes across in a subtle manner, while he encourages a 'senorita' to hear Jesus' voice.

He then switches back to reggae gospel in Careful, which is a collaboration with Goddy Goddy, who manages to be clear although he deejays his lyrics speedily. The verses are compact with lyrics that are applicable to everyday life.

He ends his album with Nobody Cares saying, "When nobody cares for me...Lord when I cry You wipe my eyes."

Mighty is a decent singer and the album is a good listen with song selections for meditating and dancing.
