The lead story in yesterday's Gleaner was indeed very depressing and is a cause for concern.
According to the story, a team of missionaries visiting from overseas was robbed at the Salvation Army School for the Blind and Visually Handicapped in St Andrew. The story said three masked men entered the premises and robbed them of cash, cellular phones and other valuables.
A story such as this is proof of the fact that no one is safe from the problem of crime. If criminals have targeted a place that was designed to provide refuge for persons with special needs, then it is clear that the rest of us are at an even greater risk.
It is unfortunate that this incident had to involve persons from overseas, as our already tarnished reputation can take no more blows. It would be unrealistic to expect that these persons, having been the victims of crime, will leave with a positive view of the island.
We are already suffering because of the negative publicity that we have been receiving of late, and an incident such as this will only fuel those who have been lashing out against our country.
We can only hope that the hoodlums responsible for this act will be apprehended and punished with the full force of the law. A strong message needs to be sent to persons who commit heartless acts such as these, and it is about time we start sending it.
