There are many cases in which young girls have been sexually molested by men who harbour the myth that if they have sexual intercourse with a virgin it will cure any sexually transmitted disease they have.
A policewoman expressed concern last month that it was time the Government launch an education programme for men who commit such acts to know that there is no truth to the myth.
Sexually transmitted diseases
"I have been involved in the investigation of several cases in which men believe that if they have sex with a virgin then they will be cured of any sexually transmitted diseases they have," the policewoman said.
"It is very sad that during this day and age that men, particularly a large number of the uneducated ones, are committing offences against young girls, sometimes even as young as six years old, because they have not been informed that having sex with a virgin cannot cure such diseases.
"They should go to a doctor or a health clinic to get help whenever they have such illnesses. The Government could do a great job by placing advertisements on the radio so that such men can know that virgins cannot cure their diseases.
"They are not only passing on the disease to the little girls but are also hurting them physically and psychologically," she added.
Serious offences
The men should also know that they are committing serious offences when they sexually molest little girls, and will get a long stretch in prison if they are convicted.
Section 48 (1) of the Offences against the Person Act states that "Whosoever shall unlawfully and carnally know and abuse any girl under the age of 12 years shall be guilty of felony and, being convicted thereof, shall be liable to imprisonment for life."
