Gunshots leave commuters stranded

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Commuters and motorists spent several hours at the Spanish Town Police Station last night, or were stranded in other parts of the town, after several shots rang out in the area last night.

The gunshots, which started at minutes past 8 p.m. on Young Street, sent many persons fleeing for cover. At the time of the incident, many people were waiting on transportation to go to their homes and other destination.

Sweating profusely

"Mi hear the shot them fire so mi jus ave fi run like mi hear news," said a woman who was sweating profusely, with one foot of her shoe off as she quickly boarded a taxi. She added that she just wanted to leave the town so she would go anywhere the taxi took her.

Meanwhile, commuters were also stranded on several sections of Burke Road and its environs as drivers drove away empty vehicles.

It is not known who or what caused the shooting. Dozens of military and police personnel were quickly on the scene. Up to late last night the area remained tense.

THE STAR learnt that at least one person was shot and injured in the incident.
