The poor are the most at risk in our society, and the lead story in the Tuesday's STAR demonstrated just how at risk they are.
The story was about the latest scam carried out, where poor persons were being asked to pay $3,000 with the reward being the promise of a Food For the Poor house.
It is quite inexcusable for persons to use unscrupulous means to get money from poor people by using an agency's good name.
But an important point this article made is just how far people are willing to go to get to what they want, whether it was right or wrong.
Illegal things
And this situation obtains for pretty much every scam that has been pulled in Jamaica. Articles published in THE STAR have similar reports of persons being ripped off, and while many of them know they are paying for illegal things, they are still desperate to get the commodity and are willing to take the risks.
It is time we recognise that only hard work and legal avenues will get us what we want and stop seeking illegal short cuts.
When we continuously get involved in illegal things for our gain, then we are sending our children a very bad message. We are teaching them that only by cheating the system can they get what they want. In a lawless society such as ours, is this something we want our children to learn?
