Actions taped shut

The lead story in yesterday's STAR should teach us at least one thing and that is to be careful with the technology we have around us.

According to the story, a video showing a popular television host, engaging in oral sex, is currently being circulated. The host, while acknowledging it was an act of consent between adults, carried out in the privacy of their bedroom, is now concerned about the impact the video will have on her teenage son.

Public figure

It is no secret that children can be cruel and in a case like this, where the boy's mother is a public figure, it would not be a surprise if his schoolmates use this to torment him. The decision to tape sexual acts has come back to torture many people and it is hard to believe that there are still some who have not learnt from the mistake made by others.

Good sense

There is no way to ensure that things intended for private use will stay that way - lots of things can happen. Though it may be hard to resist the temptation to capture intimate moments on video, good sense should prevail. In a society that loves to sensationalise things and fuel rumours, we need to be careful.

We can only hope that the host's pleas do not fall on deaf ears and that people recognise the potential harm this may do to her son.

Though the decision to tape the act, was not the smartest one, no one should be punished repeatedly for making a mistake.
