In an interesting twist of events, newcomers Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) displayed their potent array of skills in the opening game of the Reggae Jammin' Business House Volleyball Competition on the weekend, only to withdraw shortly after.
JDF got the ball rolling in the opening game of the mixed competition with a 2-0 win over National Water Commission. The Army Brigade carved out a 21-11, 21-14 win, thanks to an outstanding game by outside hitter George Tate.
Over in the male division, the JDF were once again in a dominant mood as they were 2-0 winners over Bank of Jamaica (BOJ). JDF's most valuable player, Delano Wishart, proved to be a handful for the opponents as the army men romped to a 21-7, 21-8 win.
Team's feasibility
According to the JDF team coach, Gatasheu Bonner, although efforts were made to ensure the team's feasibility in the competition, the decision to withdraw was taken by the hierarchy of the JDF.
"We had a high command of the games, but we had to withdraw from the competition due to operational duties in which every single solider will be required for duty," Bonner said.
In the other games, BOJ came away with a 2-0 win over favourites Jamaica Urban Transit Corporation (JUTC) in the mixed division. BOJ ran out to a 21-14 lead in the first set. However, JUTC pulled level in the second set following a 21-14 run. BOJ then stormed back in the third and deciding set to come away with a 21-10 win. BOJ's charge was led by most valuable player Craig Stewart.
The third game in the mixed division between Edna Manley and Jamalco was not played.
In the men's division, JUTC got back to winning ways as they defeated National Water Commission 2-0. Last year's most valuable player, Seymour Lannaman, showed great resolve in his team's close 21-18, 21-20 win.
Jamalco were a no-show for their game against Edna Manley, who secured the full points.
