CENTERSTAGE with Lady Saw

Lady Saw - File

Stage Name: Lady Saw

Real Name: Marion Hall

Birth Date: July 12, 1969

Which high school did you attend?

Oracabessa High in St Mary.

How did you get started in the business?

First of all, I use to sing at church, an' use to make up songs and remember them without writing them down. That's when I realised this was what I wanted to do.

What has been your greatest challenge in the business?

Some women in the business, who pretend they are with you when they are not.

What have you been up to lately?

I've been travelling and doing a lot of shows. The last big thing I did was in Australia like two months ago. Went down there for some major shows. In all, I did nine shows, they were called 'Big Day Out'. Millions of people came out and it was wonderful. I was also well accepted by the audience.

Do you look up to any specific artiste?

I used to look up to Mr Tenor Saw, that's how I got the name. We used to sound alike, love di man. I also respect any other woman, who was there before, who broke down that barrier for us, women, to come through, Sister Nancy, Sister Charmaine and Lady G, who were there before me. Anybody who, was there before and made it possible, I give my respect.

Are you happy with the way things are going for your career?

Yes, I'm happy, 'cause I'm at a point where my family is living wonderful and we have no needs. I can take care of myself and everybody. I can also sing whenever I want and if I don't feel like recording anything, then I can afford not to.

Anything you'd like to change about it?

No, I wouldn't like to change anything, everything happens for a reason. I'm at a point now where I'm comfortable, so I wouldn't change anything.

What are your future plans?

It's always this, having a child, a baby, and it's still not happening, but I'm still hoping and having faith in God.

Do you have any advice for young artistes coming up?

For all young artistes, especially women, be yourself. Remember yuh don't have to sleep with anyone to get your voice on record or tape. Just know you came out here to do you. If a producer wants you physically, like in bed, you don't have to do that. Jus' concentrate on your music and know, this is what you are here to do.

For the young youths, stay positive an' nuh badda wid di whole heap a gun ting. It nuh mek it.
