Next to the economy, crime is the biggest problem affecting Jamaica and it is full time we take steps to address it.
The crime blotters indicate that more than one person is killed in Jamaica each day. The criminals are not relenting in their quest to terrorise the society and so the society should not relent in its quest to catch them and punish them.
On Wednesday seven people were shot, two fatally in broad daylight in the highly populated community of Allman Town, Kingston. The number of shootings taking place by daylight indicates a frightening trend. It suggests that criminals are becoming even more brazen and that they are no longer afraid of the law.
It also suggests that they are no longer afraid of being seen by citizens, who will identify them. And so they carry out their brazen acts, anytime and anywhere they feel like, because they obviously have no reason to fear anything from the citizens.
The criminals have instilled so much fear in us that they can do what they please without fear of any witnesses coming forward. This only means that the figh against crime has become even more difficult.
Everyday we complain about the situation, yet we fail to realise that the fight against crime does not only involve the police. Many of us see things and when we fail to pass on the information we continue to give the criminals more power. The fact is if that we remain silent we are setting up ourselves to pay a greater price, possibly with our lives.
