No fooling with food

The Editor Sir,

According to a report out of the United Nations (UN) 100 million people across the world can't buy food for themselves and 95 per cent of them can't access untreated water, much less treated water, all because they don't have money.

I am cognisant of the fact that developed countries consume billions of dollars worth of food every year, in the process keeping prices up; and in most countries getting potable water is expensive.

There is a new development with scientists in the developed world using foods such as sugar cane, corn, wheat etc to produce fuel for generating electricity and the running of motor vehicles, I even learned that the amount of food products it takes to produce one gallon of fuel could feed one child for one and a half years; what a tribulation!

I am etc,
