Residents of Trench Town are condemning the murders of two police constables who were ambushed in the community last Friday. The residents are depicting a togetherness which needs to be displayed more often as we fight for a safer Jamaica.
According to the lead story in the Sunday Gleaner yesterday, the residents are not prepared to allow the ghastly incident to sour the relationship between them and the police.
Such a case is truly one which is highly desirable and one which most, if not all right thinking Jamaicans, should wish to see much more often.
Heart-warming
In a society where persons are constantly reminded to 'burn Babylon' and to not cooperate with the police, the standing up for the members of the security forces, as the Trench Town residents are doing is heart-warming and goes to show that there is hope.
In the article, social activist Dr Henley Morgan noted that the men alleged to be involved in the slaying of the two lawmen have since left the community as other gangs have condemned the attacks and have refused to provide cover for them.
As the rigorous task of making our streets safer is being tackled, our main enemy will continue to be ourselves, and as the saying goes 'united we stand but divided we fall'.
Let us put aside all political and social barriers and form a unit that will prove to be too strong for any gang or crew that thinks our lives need to be governed by their acts of intimidation or by use of violence.
