Kern's case extended

The three accused in the Cuban light-bulb scandal appeared yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court as the case against them continued.

Those appearing before RM Glen Brown to answer to fraud charges were former junior energy minister Kern Spencer and his associates, Coleen Wright and Rodney Chin.

Attorney Valerie Neita-Robertson appeared for Rodney Chin. Howard Hamilton and Robert Fletcher represented Coleen Wright, while Patrick Atkinson and Deborah Martin represented Kern Spencer .

When the case came up for mention, Director of Public Prosecution Paula Llewelyn requested that the case be put off for another month to allow the police more time to complete their investigations and for the remaining documentation to be prepared for trial.

The request caused an uproar among defence attorneys who said the matter had already been delayed by seven weeks and four more would be grossly inconsiderate.

In granting the extension, RM Glen Brown said all the time given should be appreciated as once the trial began, there would be no breaks.

The matter will again be mentioned on June 19.
