Man draws simple larceny charge

Robert Green, a street sweeper who was charged with simple larceny after stealing six panties and 16 brassieres from a vendor along Beckford Street ,appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer the charge.

Allegations are that Green stole the items from the vendor who then raised an alarm resulting in Green being apprehended by onlookers.

However the accused claimed otherwise.

After pleading guilty with explanation, he told the court that the vendor was running from the police and dropped the items, which he then retrieved on her behalf. He continued that when Moesha saw him picking up the items she cried out 'thief thief', resulting in the bystanders intervening.

Green's explanation that he has never been to prison before, nor convicted, was not enough to move Resident Magistrate Glen Brown who sentenced him to 30 days' imprisonment.
