Do or die for St Georges, Seba, ArnetT

Ainsley Walters, Freelance Writer

AFTER all the calculations are done, it has come down to one equation for Seba and St Georges tomorrow afternoon - home wins equal assured spots in next season's Premier League.

Sitting on 41 and 42 points respectively in the relegation zone, St Georges and Seba United are at home to Reno and Arnett Gardens respectively in tomorrow's final round of the 2007-2008 season.

Of the four teams involved in relegation games, just one, Reno, on 43 points, is safe from being demoted, having a superior head-to-head match-up over Arnett Gardens (43) in the possibility of both teams being beaten on the road and leap-frogged by Seba and St. Georges.

predicament

Whereas Seba and St Georges' predicament is clear, drawn games could have either joining demoted August Town in Super League, Arnett Gardens, on 43 points, must also win as a loss to Seba, coupled with a St. Georges win over Reno, would spell relegation for the Junglists.

The possibility is not far-fetched as St Georges, who won promotion to the Premiership last season, remain one of the deadliest home sides in the league, rarely losing at Lynch Park, where new coach, Geoffrey Maxwell has promised a tough game for Reno.

"The players have vowed they won't lose at home to Reno," he said in a midweek interview after St Georges secured a precious 0-0 draw at Jarrett Park against Seba United to keep their hopes alive.

fortunes

Playing Reno at home in the second round, St Georges held the men from Westmoreland to a 1-1 draw at Lynch Park.

However, Reno's fortunes have spiked in the decisive five-game fourth round as they have notched three wins in four games, including a 3-0 boardroom decision over Seba, who failed to show for a match at St. Elizabeth Technical.

Their late surge came to the fore last Wednesday when they beat safe-team Village United 3-2 at home to secure their spot for next season.

St Georges are aiming to end Reno's streak and move to 44 points, while hoping Seba either play to a draw or beat Arnett at Jarrett Park.

Should Seba draw with Arnett and St Georges beat Reno, the Montego Bay men would have only themselves to blame for relegation as they would end on 43 points to Arnett and St. Georges' 44.

Seba dug themselves into a hole by not showing for an April 30 match against Reno and made things worse for themselves after failing to put away St Georges at home on Wednesday.

To ensure fair play all around, the Jamaica Football Federation has set all games to kick-off at 3:30 p.m., barring none, meaning even games in the top half of the league, such as champions Portmore United's celebratory home match against second-place Tivoli will be in the broiling sun.

Elsewhere, Sporting Central host outgoing champions Harbour View, and Waterhouse are away at third-place Boys' Town.
