Braves Chiefs crushed Swift Sons 'B' 103-60 last night at the National Stadium court as the former national champs started the second round of the Homestyle Juices Division One Southern Conference Basketball League in convincing fashion.

Power forward Lascelles Johnson had a game-high 31 points and added seven rebounds while centre Brian Grant added 21 points and 11 rebounds as Braves overpowered the much smaller Sons.

Kevon Allen led the Sons with 13 points and Everton Jhulur contributed 10. This was Sons' second loss of the second round and they are unlikely to advance to the quarter-finals. Sixteen teams advanced from the first round and were divided in four zones. The top two teams from each zone will move on to the quarter-finals.

The victory over Swift Sons was Braves first of this round and coach Ludlow Barker said his team achieved its objectives.

"We really came into this game working on the defensive side," said Barker. "We use our defence to fuel our offence so we have to play good defence. As the score shows we got to 100 so things went our way."

Six-point deficit

Sons kept it close in the first quarter with good defensive stops and aggressive drives to the basket by Allen and faced only a six-point deficit (23-17) at the end of the period. However, Sons had no answer for Johnson as he made his presence felt in the key and had 16 points at the half with his team up 47-35. Grant, who also had four blocks, troubled Sons inside as well on the offensive and defensive end. By the third quarter, Sons lost all the intensity they started the game with, which paved the way for the blow-out.

In games played on Monday night, Derron Jackson had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Aqua Youths to a 57-46 win over Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). Waterhouse Blazers thrashed Rae Town Raptors 75-48 behind Raymond Layne's 23 points and 15 rebounds.

Brian Dallas netted 19 points as Seaview Flames crushed Fire Service 76-50 and Meadows All-Stars humbled Swift Sons 'A' 49-37. Michael Blake had a team-high 19 points for Meadows.

Action continues tomorrow evening at the National Stadium with Seaview tackling Aqua and Fire Services challenging JDF at 6:00, followed by Waterhouse vs Meadows and Swift Sons 'A' vs Rae Town.
