Rising Stars: How to Reach for the Stars

THE STAR along with Digicel Rising Stars have put together a 'How To' guide on reaching for the stars and making it in Jamaica's premiere talent contest. Follow these rules and you just might become Jamaica's next Rising Star.

Rule 1: LOOK CONFIDENT

Introduce yourself clearly and confidently. Look as though you're enjoying yourself and not as though you're in front of a firing squad.

Rule 2: SONG SELECTION

Select two songs that you love.

Make sure you're comfortable with performing them.

Find a song that's unusual and offer your version of it.

Rule 3: GET TO THE BEST PART FIRST

Don't take long to get to the "good part" of the song - start off with a verse or the chorus that can show off your voice.

Rule 4: DON'T MAKE EXCUSES

Don't apologise before the audition has even started - no one wants to hear that you have a sore throat or a sinus problem.

Rule 5: KNOW THE SONG

Know the words to the song inside and out.

Remember its acapella so backing tracks can't cover any fumbles.

Rule 6: LOOKS MAKE THE STAR

Image is important.

Show the judges that you can play the part.

Do not come to the auditions looking as though you just got out of bed.

Rule 7: DON'T TAKE IT PERSONAL

If you don't get through, it does not mean that you're not talented. Get over it and try again.

Take every audition as a learning experience that gives you more practice in achieving your goal.
