New Green emerged champions of the Captain's Bakery and Grill Manchester Major League following a gripping 2-1 win over Mile Gully at Brooks Park on the weekend.
New Green fired in two goals in two minutes following an early attacking blitz and, despite Mile Gully's resurgence early in the second half, the one goal they got in the 67th minute couldn't stop a New Green team that won 3-2 on aggregate after the two teams had shared a 1-1 result in the previous week's first leg.
Norman Wright got New Green going in the 14th minute, surprising goalkeeper Colin Stewart with a snap shot from 20 yards. Captain Kirk Baker, who had scored the previous week via a penalty, profited from the early blushes of Stewart, beating him, a few yards more, with another speculative shot in the 16th minute. Now 3-1 up overall, New Green sat back allowing Mile Gully to settle down and following a spate of attacks right after the resumption, Mile Gully got on the score sheet following a lovely build-up orchestrated by Baron Watson.
Field invasion
Andre Reid finished off the move expertly to easily tap in past the New Green custodian Andre Bloomfield, much in the same manner that he had done when his team had equalised the previous week. Mile Gully controlled the action for most of the second half, as New Green seemed bent on protecting the one goal lead, and ultimately their second hold on the Manchester Major League title. Referee Kevin Morrison's final whistle was greeted with a field invasion and their were wild cheers as Captain Horace Burrell, in his capacity as sponsor, handed over the trophy to coach Andre Swaby.
New Green's conquest assures them of a place in next season's South Central Confed Super League and a further $175,000 following previous money earned through winning the mid-season final and earning most points on completion of the preliminary round.
