Cop charged in gun pay-off

Rasbert Turner, Spanish Town

A police sergeant who was allegedly caught collecting money to drop a firearm charge against a man was taken into custody on corruption charges by the Anti-Corruption Division on Sunday.

The policeman, Dennis Arthurs of the Spanish Town Police Station was picked up in the Oasis Shopping Plaza when a female complainant allegedly carried $50,000 worth of marked money to the officer with whom plans were made.

When the money exchanged hands, detectives who were nearby, swooped down and apprehended their colleague. He has since been placed at the Horizon Remand Centre in Kingston and is booked to appear in court later.

THE STAR understands that the money was allegedly being paid for the policeman to drop a case of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition against a man who was picked up by the police in Spanish Town last year with a hand gun.
