Baby Tash, queen of competitions

Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter

Winner of the first 'Queen of the Dancehall' title Baby Tash. - Colin Hamilton

After entering several competitions, Baby Tash is finally in the big league.

In April she was crowned Magnum Queen of Dancehall.

The artiste, whose real name is Tashon Williams, entered the Digicel Rising Stars competition on two occasions, Dancing Dynamites in its first year as well as Tastee Talent Contest.

Williams said she reached as far a the semi-finals of each.

"It's not about getting a buss, it's about doing what I enjoy. It's not just music, it is entertainment on a whole," she said.

She added that she likes performing, whether drama, music, dance, stage productions or public speaking.

This is quite the case as while she was the head girl at Jonathan Grant High School she entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) speech and drama festival. She was even part of the Ashe ensemble.

Highly educated

But while Baby Tash likes to perform, she also believes that being highly educated is just as or even more important.

After leaving high school, she attended Garmex Heart Academy, Portmore Community College and The University College of the Caribbean where she received a diploma in business administration.

She also completed two years at the University of Technology (UTech) in a bachelor degree programme in business administration but while there, she realised that she wanted to study Media and Communication at the University of the West Indies (UWI) instead. She is currently waiting on a response from UWI.

"Until the day I die I will still be going to school 'cause it's never too much. It is never hard for me to get a job," said the 23-year old.

Her schooling has enabled her to get several jobs. She has worked at companies including Life of Jamaica and Dehring Bunting and Golding.

After realising that she wanted to work in entertainment, she went to work at Sandals Montego Bay as an Entertainment Co-ordinator.

At Sandals, she choreographed dance productions and hosted karaoke and beach parties.

The activities at the hotel helped to prepare Baby Tash for the stage and propelled her to her most recent achievement.

"I feel blessed to have won this competition because I came in as a wildcard pick. Miss Kitty is like my angel and God was working through her," she said.

Collected money

Throughout the weeks of the competition, she did not appear to be the favourite. She also admitted that she was not actively campaigning for herself but there were other persons that obviously loved her and were voting for her.

A lady at the craft market in Mobay, Donna, called Sandals and left a message. She asked that I visit her at work. I went and she collected money for me that amounted to $10,000.

Her friend, Elsian said to me 'yuh nuh know how much Donna love yuh, she love yuh like cook food'," said Baby Tash who is from Spanish Town.

She says other persons from downtown Kingston such as Riley Dread, persons from Peters and Luke Lanes and the arcades were campaigning for her.

So although many persons did not seem pleased with her win, she is not concerned with the negatives.

"Everybody will have their own opinion because everybody will have their favourites and you can't fight that but I am deserving of this. I am just giving thanks for my blessings and thank those who voted for me. I am not concerned with those who didn't believe in me."

"When something happens in your life don't question it 'cause God is in control."

She also dismissed any idea that there might be any rivalry between Monalisa or Tellah and herself, stemming from the clash near the end of the competition.

"All of that is just for entertainment, it's part of the competition and there is nothing going on otherwise. I shocked a lot people that I have known for years. They didn't know I could step into character like that. There's a lot to Baby Tash," she said.
