Stage name: Tifa
Real name: Latifa Brown
Birthday: December 12
Which high school did you attend?
Wolmer's Girls
How did you get started in the business?
Grew up around music, stepfather (Sampalue) is a producer. He is responsible for putting up artistes like Lady Saw. I was also a part of Ashé for almost six years, attended UWI and it was after that I decided to do my thing, which is music.
What has been your greatest challenge in the business so far? Most female artistes would say being a female artiste, but for me it's just getting my stuff out there.
What have you been up to lately?
Ward 21 jus' put out a new female rhythm called Estrogen, which I'm featured on with the song Bottom of the Barrel. I also have a single out on Jam 2 label called Mi Man Love Mi, have another song with Timberlee called Wifey and Matey. I'm working on my album titled Sex, Love and Lies to be released in Japan and Europe. I'm also working on some things like promotions and such.
Do you look up to any specific artiste?
Yes, I do, every artiste, of course, but in terms of favourites Mary J. Blige, Ward 21, Dennis Brown, Lady Saw, Maxi Priest and Patra for paving the way and being the first female artiste to go on BET.
Are you happy with the way things are going for your career right now?
Right now at this moment, yes. I'll be going on tour and have couple shows overseas, so I give God thanks.
Anything you'd like to change about it?
I don't know, don't think so, I like the gradual progress, I get to see how my fan base has grown and once again give God thanks because it's not the easiest profession.
What are your future plans? Want to be the Jamaican Madonna.
Do you have any advice for young artistes coming up?
Make sure you have a reasonable level of education, at least high school level. This business is not for everybody, a lot of people come and go. There is also a lot of rejections, 'bad mind' and not because you love your song that mean the selectors or people will love it and, finally, you have to be strong.
