Central Kingston under curfew

Dwayne Mcleod, Staff Reporter

A curfew was imposed on sections of Southside and Tel-Aviv in central Kingston, lasting from last night into this morning, in an effort to stop an ongoing gang war between the two communities.

The curfew, which began at 6 p.m. yesterday, was lifted at 6:00 this morning. Areas which were put under curfew included Laws Street, Mark Lane, Fleet Street and Tower Street.

The imposed curfew came in the wake of the shooting deaths of five persons in 24 hours.

It is reported that residents of Gold Street found the lifeless body of 37-year-old nursing student, Carla Rosemarie Thomas, at her home at 6:30 a.m. yesterday.

The police said residents had reported hearing explosions about four hours earlier.

While the Kingston Central police were processing that murder scene, explosions were heard on High Holborn Street about 7:30 a.m.

Subsequent investigations led the police to another crime scene. This time, an elderly couple were found dead in their home.

The man, 70-year-old Bramley Walker, was reportedly shot as he sat in a chair, while his common-law wife, 68-year-old Marjorie Miles, was shot while in her bed.

The police are theorising that their deaths were in reprisal for the killing of Thomas.

On Tuesday, two persons were shot and killed in the area.
