Family firebombed in 'Payne Land'

Residents, who lived next door to a house that was firebombed on Uganda Drive, Tavares Gardens, on Tuesday morning, removed their furniture to prevent it from being destroyed in the fire, which almost spread to their properties. - Ian Allen

A family of nine, which was attacked by gunmen several times over the past three months, lost all their possessions, when their house was firebombed on Tuesday in Tavares Gardens, more popularly known as Payne Land.

Maria Smith, 34, her boyfriend and her seven children, ages four-17, were fortunately not at their Uganda Drive home during the attack . "Mi neva deh yah, but di man dem come up thru di lane and dem fire nuff shot and come throw 'grenade' in di house," she said.

Smith claims her 14-year-old daughter has been beaten by gunmen, her nephew was shot two weeks ago and shots fired at them several times for no reason. "Mi nuh do dem nutten, mi waan know why dem always a pick pan mi," she said.

Smith was not at home because she had decided not to stay there because of the recurring attacks. Residents from the community claim it was men from Delacree Lane who attacked them and have been the source of their problem. "Because wi (Village) and Building a live good, dem nuh like dat," one resident said.

Ongoing gang war

However, residents from Delacree Lane said they know nothing about the firebombing and have tried to keep the peace, but the residents from Village and Building refuse to leave them alone. "We want di peace, but every time wi have peace, dem come ova here come cause some trouble and wi nah go siddung and just tek things suh," a resident said.

In one instance, they said a resident of their community was shot for no reason while he was searching an open lot for scrap metal to sell two weeks ago. The boy, believed to be about 15 years old, died in hospital on Monday night.

Residents said the situation is so bad that they cannot even go to Three Miles because they are being targeted.

Superintendent Derrick Knight, head of the St Andrew South Division, said they had increased their presence in the affected areas and would be meeting with residents today at 4 p.m.

He said the violence has been a result of ongoing gang war in the community and things escalated when a gang member returned to the area after being recently released on bail. In addition, he said, the police are searching for some men who they believe are behind the violence.
