Two-team battle for Premier League

by Ainsley Walters, Freelance Writer

( L - R ) Tivoli's Navion Boyd, Portmore's Roen Nelson

THE two-horse race for the Premier League title continues tomorrow with Tivoli Gardens (59 points) sitting five behind leaders Portmore United, hoping the leaders stumble, at least twice, in the five games left to decide the season.

Tivoli, who had a goal feast against Granville in Sunday's Champions Cup knock-out semi-final, stomping the St James Confederation team 7-0, are aiming to repeat their second round premiership win over Sporting Central when the teams meet at 5:00 p.m. at the Edward Seaga Complex.

Tivoli's dilemma

In three meetings this season, Tivoli only got the better of Sporting in Kingston, a 2-0 win, after losing 2-0 at Brancourt in the first round. When the teams met in Clarendon for the third round, Brancourt held Tivoli to a 0-0 draw.

With Tivoli on a high and gunning to reduce the five-point deficit behind Portmore, Sporting will be hardpressed to leave the Edward Seaga Complex with even a share of the points.

It took a 90th minute goal for Sporting Central to squeeze into the premiership top six and appear thrown to the lions, taking on Tivoli in Kingston.

Tivoli's all-round strength, Navion Boyd in attack, paired with Jermaine Allen, who booted in four against Granville, will prove a handful with a skilful midfield marshalled by Craig Stewart and Steve Green.

Portmore have a tougher task at hand against Boys' Town, who beat them 2-0 when they last visited Ferdie Neita Park.

From their three meetings this season, Portmore are yet to get the better of Boys' Town, drawing their first two games 0-0. George Vernal continues to be the spark upfront for third-place Boys' Town, one of four teams going through the motions among the top six as their 50 points give them no chance of getting back to Portmore.

A win for Boys' Town could stall Portmore, but Linval Dixon's team has not lost in eight games and are flying high on confidence.

Portmore's Roen Nelson remains one of the most feared strikers in the league, given anything near a half-chance in and around the box. However, Nelson won't be the only player Boys' Town will have to worry about as the likes of Anthony Bennett, Eric Vernon and Carlington Smith are all dangerous in attack.

From spot kicks, both teams are deadly as Vernon packs a bullet-like shot and Portrmore's Michael Binns has been testing 'keepers from long range.

Defence will be key and with both teams boasting the best defensive records in the league, a cracker is in store at Ferdie Neita Park.

Elsewhere among the top tier, Waterhouse (45) host Harbour View (47) at Drewsland, hoping to get their first of the season over their rivals from east Kingston.

The relegation battle is on among the lower six with seventh and eighth place teams, Village and St. Georges on 39 points each, meeting at the Elliston Wakeland Centre where Village won 2-0 in the second round.

Seba United, ninth on 38 points, must get the nod against next-to-last August Town on 34 at Jarrett Park, whereas Reno, last on 33 points, will be gunning to leave the foot of the table when they host Arnett Gardens, 10th on 35 points, at St. Elizabeth Technical.

Games On

Village vs St Georges at 3:30

Reno vs Arnett Gardens at 3:30

Boys' Town vs Portmore at 3:30

Tivoli Gardens vs Sporting Central at 5:00

Waterhouse vs Harbour View at 6:00

Seba vs August Town at 6:00

Note: For this fourth and final round, teams ranked 1-6 play each other once to decide the title and teams 7-12 play each other once to decide who gets demoted.
