The lead story in last Thursday's STAR was indeed very disturbing.
According to the story, two employees of a Burger King restaurant in Montego Bay, St James, were injured after they were burnt with oil by another employee. There had reportedly been an incident involving two employees, resulting in one being fired. This employee, apparently upset, reportedly used the oil to burn the co-worker, as well as another employee who was standing close by.
Though we are not clear on the details, it is safe to assume that this incident occurred because of someone's inability to contain his or her anger. It is hard to imagine what the assaulted employee could have done to anger the other one so much, but we are sure that whatever it was, such a response was very extreme.
We note, with concern, that when the story was published, no report had been made to the police. We hope this will change soon, as something of this nature should not simply be swept under the rug and 'sorted out' in other ways. What occurred was a criminal offence and it should be
handed over to the police.
What is disturbing is that this is the second incident involving hot oil in the fast food industry. In the previous one, a customer was assaulted by an employee of a popular restaurant. It seems we need to be very careful when we visit these establishments as we never know who will be wielding a pot of oil, and if or when they will use it.
